CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST (CHT)

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) can be either a licensed Physical Therapist (PT-DPT) or an Occupational Therapist (OT/OTR) with a minimum of 4000 hours of hands-on experience in the treatment of hand injuries and impairments. They must also hold a license as a Physical or Occupational Therapist in the United States for at least five years.

Once these rigorous prerequisites are met, the therapist must successfully complete a Board Examination administered by the HTCC Board. Upon passing the examination, they earn the title of Certified Hand Therapist, enabling them to provide specialized Hand Therapy services for patients with hand trauma or injuries.

WHY CHT FOR HAND REHABILITATION?

“Hand therapy is a specialized and compassionate approach to caring for injured or impaired hands, with the dual objective of restoring both function and appearance. The human hand, often regarded as the third most vital part of the body after the heart and brain, is instrumental in our daily interactions with the world, both personally and professionally. Hands effortlessly execute countless tasks each day, making them intricate and delicate.

When hand function is compromised due to injury or impairment, it can profoundly affect our ability to engage with the world, impacting our psychological and social well-being. Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs) possess the expertise and extensive experience required to address hand injuries and impairments, providing timely interventions crucial for hand rehabilitation. CHTs also understand the psycho-social consequences of hand injuries and excel in building trust and rapport with patients and their families, which is paramount for successful hand rehabilitation. Their comprehensive knowledge spans various diagnoses, conditions, and clinical presentations.”
